Madison Girls Go to State Championship

The Madison High School girls basketball team has had a phenomenal season and now they'll be taking it to the state championship game. The girls 50-43 win over Ironton in the state semifinals at Ohio State University puts them at 27-0 for the season. They'll face Findlay Liberty-Benton or Smithville in the title game on Saturday at 10:45 at the Schottenstein Center at Ohio State.

Middletown Senior to Play Basketball at Penn State

Middletown High School senior Bill Edwards has signed on to play basketball for Penn State next year. The 6-foot-6 Edwards was the Ohio Senior Player of the Year, averaged seventeen points, and led the conference with nine rebounds and almost five assists this past season. He was also the co-player of the year in the conference, district player of the year, and named first-team All-Ohio in the largest classification of schools.

Edwards narrowed his decision down to Penn State or Miami University but in the end Penn State won out. “It was pretty tough but coming down to it, I think that Miami and Penn State really stood out because Miami was always there throughout the way and so was Penn State...Penn State felt right and I think it will be somewhere for me to pursue my career at," he told Rivals.com.

It's not surprising Edwards is on his way to becoming a basketball great. His father, Bill Edwards, Sr., played college basketball at Wright State, briefly played with the Philadelphia 76ers, and played professional basketball in Europe. His mother, Glenetta Edwards, was a star basketball player at Monroe High School.

M.U.M Basketball Wins State Championship

Miami University Middletown has been a college branch campus for Miami University Oxford for many years. It functions just like a normal college. It has normal classes, students and faculty.It also has a state hampionship basketball team.

Last Sunday, the Miami University Middletown Men's Thunderhawk basketball team traveled to the University of Ohio-Chillicothe to compete for the ORC State Championship for the first time under the leadership of head coach Bob Nocton, who has been there for four years. The one hour and fouty-five minute bus ride was filled with eager anticipation as MUM traveled on its way to the Championship game. Last year, #1 seeded MUM was knocked off in the semi-final round by rival Miami University Hamilton. Needless to say MUM was ready to make a statement, which they did.

This season was an incredibly good one for the team. They had an impressive record of 24 wins and 6 losses overall. But that is not the only impressive record, the team also capped off with an undefeated 13 wins and 0 losses in their ORCC Conference naming them league champions for a second consecutive year. This accomplishment again landed the Thunderhawks the #1 seed in the tournament bracket.

After an impressive and easy victory against Ohio University-Eastern the day before, the Thunderhawks were hyped and ready to take on the University of Cincinnati-Clermont who was last years tournament champs. But, as they had done all season, the Thunderhawks answered with an impressive effort offensively and a stunning defensive performance pulling off an 83-69 victory.

This was do to an impressive display of talent from the Thunderhawk starting five, all of which were in double figures. Freshman Curt Thompson, from Milton Union, had 12 points, sophomore Thomas Wilson, from Princeton, added 11, freshman Jeremy Williams, from Medowdale, finished with a great 19, freshman Charles Thompson, from Aiken, had 21, and junior Brad Bergman, from Botkins, added 10. Brad Bergman, who has finished his career at MUM was very close to performing a triple double and was named the MUM representative to the All-Tournament team. Charles Thompson, leading scorer for the Thunderhawks, was named tournament MVP.

The team has many good players and a very deep bench which was a key factor in their success this season. An impressive end to a very impressive season. The coaching staff at MUM is already hard at work recruiting players to carry on for next season.

Middletown Christian v.s. Dayton-Jefferson 1-16-09

Last night my old high school basketball team from Middletown Christian faced off against one of the toughest teams in their conference, Jefferson High School from Dayton. Many people were excited about this game for two reasons: it was a big conference game for both teams and because both teams have two outstanding players. Im talking, of course, about Jefferson's Adreian Payne and Middletown Christian's Kenneth Gaynor.

Both players are fun to watch and both can do an amazing job with the ball. Through out the night the game seemed less like a game between the two teams and more like a game between Gaynor and Payne. Both are among the leading players in their Metro-Buckeye Conference and in the area. The battle between Gaynor and Payne was hard fought but in the end neither was the victor as both players had an astounding team high of 28 points a piece. Both players made some big plays for their teams during the game. Gaynor, who hit his 1,000 point career mark a few games ago, had two shot blocks against Payne along with a couple of steals and some huge rebounds and Payne had two dunks.

The Eagles, who entered the game with a record of 7 wins and 4 losses, stayed with the Broncos most of the game holding the Bronco's lead to two most of the second half. But late in the fourth, with the Broncos up by two, the Eagles made some key turnovers which Jefferson capitalized on. The Eagles ended up losing the game with a final score of Jefferson 65 to the Eagles 52. Lucky for the Eagles they get another shot at the Broncos later in the season. The eagles record moves to 7-5 and the broncos move up to 8-2. The Eagles play again Tuesday night, January 20, away at Summit Country Day.

Mighty Middies Who Went On To Greatness

Middletown, Ohio has been and continues to be a home to some of the most competitive sports teams and athletic individuals the state has ever seen, and on a couple rare occasions among the best in the world.

Middletown can boast claim to basketball legend Jerry Lucas, called by some the greatest high school basketball player of all time. Cris Carter, much acclaimed vikings wide receiver and now host of HBO's Inside the NFL, and his older brother Butch who went from playing basketball in the NBA to coming home and coaching for our very own high school. Todd Bell, Gay Brewer, Howard Jones and Charlie Root, all Middletown Middies who went on to become great names in sports history.

The legacy of Middletown Middies in the world of professional sports is not yet over though, and even as we can remember and take pride in the amazing athletes that have come from our past, we look forward to the great athletes that are still waiting to make their mark in professional sports. Maybe the source of our greatest pride hasn't emerged yet, or maybe he's currently on the path.
