Middletown in March

If you're tired of snow and cold weather and need to get out of the house, never fear; March is a busy month for the city of Middletown! From concerts to events that will get your hearts pumping, get yourself or your family out of the house and out on the town with these fun events!

March 5th: On the first Friday of each month, the First United Methodist Church and Middletown Community Foundation sponsor a concert that is free to the public. The March performance, which starts at noon, will feature Ron Esposito playing Tibet singing bowls, thumb pianos, drums, and vocals!

March 6th: On March 6th, The Middletown Symphony Orchestra will perform at Finkelman Auditorium at Miami University. The concert starts at 8:00 PM and will include music such as Samuel Barber's "School for Scandal Overture," Beethoven's "Symphony No. 2," and Brahms "Double Concerto for Violin and Cello." Tickets are $25.00 for adults and $20.00 for students.

March 7th: The Southwest Ohio Symphonic Band will perform at the Finkelman Auditorium at Miami University in Middletown. The concert is free and it starts at 2:30 PM. Refreshments will follow.

March 11th: Keep your health in check with a free blood pressure screening at the Middletown Community Center. Sponsored by Hospice Care of Middletown, the event lasts from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM.

March 12th: Help raise money for earthquake victims in Haiti at the Machester Inn. The Rescue Haiti Charity Ball begins at 6:00 PM and features dinner, guest speakers, music and more! It cost $25.00 to attend.

March 20th: Mayhem & Mystery presents: "Are You Brighter Than a Night Light" at the Manchester Inn. The show plus dinner will cost you $26.95 plus tax & gratuity. Seating and cash bar open at 6:30, show starts at 7:00 and dinner is served at 7:30, upon the completion of Act One.

March 20th & 21st: The Middletown Spring Blast Soccer Tourney will take place that weekend from 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM. 200-300 teams will play! The event takes place at Jacob and Smith Parks in Middletown.

March 20th: The St. Patrick's Day 5K Run/Walk is a great way to get outside and get some exercise! The race starts at Middletown High School and circles to Breiel Blvd, North to Manchester Rd, East to Marshall, South to Rosedale, West to Breiel Blvd, and back to the high school. The event starts at 10:00 AM.

March 27th: The Tea, Vintage Style Show with the Middletown Symphony Orchesta will take place at 2:00 PM at the Manchester Inn. The event is designed to help raise money for the orchestra and will feature tea, a fashion show, silent auction, and Vintage Style by Linda Van Arsdal.

Ohio Energy & Climate Conference

The Ohio Liberty Council, together with the Dayton Tea Party, are inviting the public to the Ohio Energy and Climate Conference on Saturday, February 6, in Middletown. They say the public can learn the "truth about climate change."

The event will take place in the Dave Finkelman Auditorium at Miami University's Middletown Campus, from 1:00 PM to 5:00PM. Guests from the Heritage Foundation, Cato Institute, and the Institute for Energy Research will be on hand for discussion on a number of topics including, current and future policy, the science of climate change and energy sources, and practical applications of energy sources with a focus on nuclear energy.

These guests include Ben Lieberman, Senior Policy Analyst for the Heritage Foundation, Patrick Michaels, Senior Fellow in Environmental Studies at the Cato Institute, Mary Hutzler, Senior Fellow at the Institute for Energy Research, and William Tucker, author of Terrestrial Energy.

The event is sponsored by the Ohio Liberty Council’s Cincinnati Tea Party, Cincinnati 9/12 Project, and Dayton Tea Party. Only 750 tickets will be sold. They are $12 and can be purchased at American Junto. Because American Junto is a 501(c)(3) organization, tickets are tax deductible.

Middletown Senior to Play Basketball at Penn State

Middletown High School senior Bill Edwards has signed on to play basketball for Penn State next year. The 6-foot-6 Edwards was the Ohio Senior Player of the Year, averaged seventeen points, and led the conference with nine rebounds and almost five assists this past season. He was also the co-player of the year in the conference, district player of the year, and named first-team All-Ohio in the largest classification of schools.

Edwards narrowed his decision down to Penn State or Miami University but in the end Penn State won out. “It was pretty tough but coming down to it, I think that Miami and Penn State really stood out because Miami was always there throughout the way and so was Penn State...Penn State felt right and I think it will be somewhere for me to pursue my career at," he told Rivals.com.

It's not surprising Edwards is on his way to becoming a basketball great. His father, Bill Edwards, Sr., played college basketball at Wright State, briefly played with the Philadelphia 76ers, and played professional basketball in Europe. His mother, Glenetta Edwards, was a star basketball player at Monroe High School.

Verity Statue Moves To MUM

In 1901, George M. Verity relocated his business headquarters of ARMCO from Cincinnati to Middletown due to the request of the local community. Since then ARMCO, also known as AK Steel, has been part of the city of Middletown until this year.

AK Steel has since moved their headquarters to West Chester, and in doing this, abandoned the statue of George M. Verity. The decision to move the headquarters has raised the question, "What is to become of Verity Statue?".

The decision has been made to move the statue from its current location, former AK Steel's headquarters, to the new location of Miami University of Middletown. "Everyone is thrilled with the move, ARMCO retires, the Verity family, because of the new location, the statue will be seen by more people." said Alan McCoy, AK Steel Spokesperson.

The inscription on Verity Statue reads:
"ARMCO Spirit is a comprehensive vital force which finds expression in the practical application of policies builded on a platform of christian principles in which selfish purpose has no place." by George M. Verity who moved ARMCO Steel to Middletown in 1901.

Miami University bans Smoking

Miami University announced that as of September of 2008, the campuses will be smoke-free. This action goes hand in hand with Ohio's ban on indoor smoking that began in December of 2006. This will affect all campuses including Oxford, Hamilton, Middletown, and even the campus in Europe. Smoking will be banned on all university property, including sidewalks, athletic facilities, and any other open space on campus. The only exception will be small, limited spaces near campus housing. Anyone who smokes must leave university property before smoking. In addition to this, the university will be offering programs to help students stop smoking.
