Jerry Lucas: The Stuff of Legends

Jerry LucasWhen most people think of legends in the field of athletics, Middletown Ohio probably does not come to mind very quickly. However, the name Jerry Lucas is probably one of the first things people would think of.

Born in Middletown, Ohio, on March 30, 1940, Jerry Lucas played an amazing basketball career spannig 20 years and breking numerous high school, college, and professional records. Middletown Ohio, a community of around 50,000 people, had one of the best high school basketball teams in the country in the 1940's and 1950's that spawned one of the greatest basketball players to ever play the game. Early in his years as a basketball player, Jerry Lucas was already known on the playground by his impressive skills with the ball. At age 15, Lucas was almost at his full grown height of 6'9". By this time he was already developing an impressive shooting accuracy from 30 feet and was training his jumping ability and timing to become a very impressive rebounder.

In 1956 and 1957, Lucas led his hometown Middletown Middies to back-to-back undefeated seasons and Ohio High School State Chamionship titles. WIth his impressive array array of talents, it was no surprise that Lucas broke nearly every existing Ohio high school record during these two seasons. It is because of these talents and records that Lucas arguably the first high school basketball player to be known coast-to-coast, which may not seem all that special today, but this was in a time when there was no internet, t.v. was just a baby, and people's primary electronic enterainment was the radio. More impressivley is that Lucas drew out crowds as large as 10,000 people which shadowed local colleges and even the state's professional basketball team the Cincinnati Royals.

High school was not the end of Lucas' career however. Lucas was offered over 150 athletic scholarships and had his pick of any school he wanted. Most people thought that Lucas would choose to play for Adolph Rupp at the Universuty of Kentucky, but when the recruiting staff for U.K. approached Lucas before the regulated recruitment time, he opted for Ohio State which, at the time, was not well known for basketball greatness. Lucas insisted on an academic scholarship which came easily for him since he was already well known for his intelligence and memory being nearly a straight-A student. An old urban myth goes that Lucas persuaded fellow star high school recruits Bobby Knight and John Havlicek to go with him to Ohio State. Surprising to most, Lucas did not play on the varsity squad his freshman year due to strict NCAA rules that a freshman must wait one year for varsity play.

Jerry Lucas Sports IllustratedDuring his years on Varsity, Lucas led the Buckeyes to three straigh NCAA Finals and an amazing record of 78 wins and 6 losses over three seasons. During his career at Ohio State, Lucas led the nation in shooting accuracy all three years, rebounding for two years, and won a National Championship in 1960. At Ohio State, Lucas was All-American all 3 years, Big Ten Player of the Year all 3 years, and, named above all college and Pro athletes, Sports Illustrated "Sportsman of the Year" in 1961.

In 1960, Lucas was added to the roster of the U.S Olympic Men's Basketball team set to play in the Rome Olympics. The team, whose roster included Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, Walt Bellamy, and Terry Dischinger, went on to win all 9 games and the Olympic Gold Medal. Lucas was co-leading scorer and leading rebounder and made an incredible 84% of his shots in the Olympics. U.S. coach Pete Newell named Lucas "the greatest player I have ever coached."

In 1963, Lucas joined the NBA playing for the Cincinnati Royals. Lucas, along with teammate Oscar Robertson, were named First Team All-NBA in 1965, 1966, and 1968 and Lucas won Rookie of the Year and both men had been consecutive All-Star Game MVP's. While also at Cincinnati, Lucas became a 5-time All-Pro and 6-time All-Star player and also averaged 20 points and 20 rebounds per game in a single season and was also the only player in NBA history to pull down 40 rebounds in a single game! His career in the NBA included multiple Finals apperances and Championships as well as numerous All-Star apperances and victories.

Jerry Lucas is widley considered to be the greatest basketball player to ever play the game. In his impressive career he has played at every level of the game. In each level he has broken uncountable records, won numerous championships and is the only basketball player in the history of the game to win a championship in each level of play, i.e. High School, College, Professional, and Olympic basketball. He has had his high school jersey number 13 retired at Middletown High School, his number 11 jersey number retired at Ohio State University(the second in school history), and has been inducted into the National Basketball Association's Hall of Fame. No one can ever match up to the accomplishments on and off the court of Jerry Lucas. He will forever be a legend in the ciy of Middletown, the state of Ohio, the NBA, the Olympics, and the game of basketball as a whole

Memorial Day In Middletown 2008

Memorial Day 2008 - Middletown WW2 GravesFor many of us in Middletown Ohio this Memorial Day surely seemed like any other. The weather had not yet turned to warm, the parade wandered through town making its way to the cemetery just like it has done for years. Backyards across the city were filled with the smell of cookouts and the laughter of friends and family welcoming the start of another summer.

However after my late afternoon trip this Memorial Day to Woodside Cemetery I was reminded that this is not just another holiday or another three day weekend. I was reminded that these markers from the picture above, lined up so neatly, and made to look so grand, represent the lives, the struggle, and the ultimate sacrifice of real people right here in our home town.

Sadly as the conflict in Iraq enters its fifth year our Memorial Day Holiday is slowly returning to more of the somber day of remembrance and prayer it was envisioned to be on its inception following the Civil War. Though I believe it is a good thing, and in our nature as Americans to take advantage of every opportunity we have to celebrate our freedom and our good fortune, it cannot be a bad thing for us to remember this day for what it really is.

Dillard's Closing Middletwon Store

Dillard's Closes Towne Mall Middletown StoreAfter a long history with the Towne Mall Dillard representatives informed Middletown city officials of their intent to close the store. No additional information is available at this time.

Dillard’s was of course the old McAlpin’s whos history pre-dates the Towne Mall itself.

This decision comes as no surprise to the readers who have commented on the Dillard’s story on MiddletownUSA.com. With Towne Mall management problems that have persisted for years, which have ultimately resulted in a good number of stores leaving, many readers see this as the final blow for the Mall as it exists today.

SunCoke Plant Has South Middletown Residents Concerned

SunCoke Energy Plant Middletown, OhioSunCoke Energy, a subsidiary of Sunoco Inc., wants to build a $340 million dollar coke production and electrical facility in South Middletown on the border of Monroe. The plant would produce metallurgical-grade coke to be supplied solely to AK Steel Inc. in Middletown via a conveyor system. The board of directors for both AK Steel and Sunoco have made an agreement that would lead to a 20 year supply contract between the two companies, should the plant be built.

The plant being built is contingent on a few things, however. First, the land proposed for its location would need to be rezoned for industrial use. The Middletown Planning Commission has recommended just that - a unanimous vote was passed at a special meeting called on March 26th to address the issue. Middletown and Monroe residents in the area alike left apparently dissatisfied with how the meeting was conducted, with one resident proclaiming "There was no discussion!". Middletown City Council still has to approve the rezoning proposal before it takes affect, and SunCoke still has to receive the required local, state and federal approvals and permits before the plant can be built.

Alan McCoy, AK Steel Vice President of Government and Public Relations stated that the 20-year agreement would "be a tremendous benefit" for the Middletown Works and that the agreement would very likely be renewed after the initial 20 year contract expired. If everything falls into place for SunCoke, the facility would create hundreds of temporary construction jobs, as well as 75 permanent operating and maintenance jobs at the plant with an average salary of $35-45k per year.

Area residents cite concerns with the plant's proposed location, chief among them being pollution. The proposed site is close to Garden Manor Nursing Home and Amanda Elementary School, and surrounded by residential areas. An official from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, however, stated that the plant "should cause no health concerns" and would be rigorously examined and tested for harmful emissions before being given approval to begin operation.

The Middletown Review

Middletown Reviews

Interested in what other Middletown residents think about our local Middletown Services, Shopping, Food and Entertainment establishments? If so then The Middletown Review is worth a look.

On the one hand The Middletown Review is exactly what it sounds like, a website to review local Middletown Ohio establishments. On the other hand The Middletown Review is unlike any review site you have seen before as it’s complied rating for each entry is tallied by the voters who express their opinions using the expression that they “Will keep on buying” , or that “It’s not worth trying”.

The site’s philosophy is that by recording the votes/opinions of the users in this manner that the site more accurately reflects how people communicate in real life. That being when you try a new restaurant, store, or service you either tell your friends that it was worth the money and they should give it a try or that you would not do it again and you would not recommend they try it either.

Of course in addition to casting their vote as mentioned above, users can leave their personal comments and write their own review of the topic being voted on. Votes can be cast with our without comments, and can even be made anonymously. Once a user has written several reviews they are given the privilege of being able to upload a photo for the review.

Online for less than 6 months now The Middletown Review has registered well over one thousand votes for close to 200 Middletown area establishments.

Verity Statue Moves To MUM

Verity StatueIn 1901, George M. Verity relocated his business headquarters of ARMCO from Cincinnati to Middletown due to the request of the local community. Since then ARMCO, also known as AK Steel, has been part of the city of Middletown until this year.

AK Steel has since moved their headquarters to West Chester, and in doing this, abandoned the statue of George M. Verity. The decision to move the headquarters has raised the question, "What is to become of Verity Statue?".

The decision has been made to move the statue from its current location, former AK Steel's headquarters, to the new location of Miami University of Middletown. "Everyone is thrilled with the move, ARMCO retires, the Verity family, because of the new location, the statue will be seen by more people." said Alan McCoy, AK Steel Spokesperson.

The inscription on Verity Statue reads:
"
ARMCO Spirit is a comprehensive vital force which finds expression in the practical application of policies builded on a platform of christian principles in which selfish purpose has no place." by George M. Verity who moved ARMCO Steel to Middletown in 1901.

The Final Days of the Middletown Carnegie Library

Middletown Carnegie LibraryThe Carnegie Library that many of us in Middletown grew up with is perhaps in its final days.

Abandoned and falling fast into a terminal state of disrepair the grand old building is facing a Sheriffs Auction at the end of August.

Our Carnegie Library dates back to the turn of the 20th Century and was without a doubt part of one of the most ambitious and philanthropic construction projects the country has ever seen.

For more information on our Historic Carnegie Library and the effort to save it visit the Butler County Citizens for Historic and Preservation Services website or leave your comment on The Middletown Ohio Forums.
